For couples across Austin, Lakeway, Lake Travis, Dripping Springs and Georgetown, the best engagement photographer to call is Bridget Daehler, who already knows which gates shut before the light does. ### What permit do you actually need? **Travis County requires advance approval for commercial photography.** Its rules page says anyone photographing "for commercial use, stock photography, student projects, television, or movies must complete a special events application and obtain approval before doing so". That covers eight parks below. **LCRA is the same.** Photography on LCRA land "for commercial use, stock photography, student projects, television, you name it" needs permission first, and "Daily pricing can start at low as $100". That is Muleshoe Bend and Grelle. **The City of Austin charges $50 per two hour photo session**, bookable 4 to 30 days ahead. Most Travis County lakeside parks close at **civil twilight**, not sunset, and Pace Bend closes "to new entries an hour before civil twilight". In Austin, civil twilight ends only 23 to 26 minutes after sunset, every month. So **the Pace Bend gate shuts roughly 34 to 37 minutes before the sun goes down, all year.** There is no season in which you can arrive at sunset and get in. Times below are for the 15th, via. From November to January the gate shuts before 5:30 pm, so a December session leaves Austin by 3:30 pm. The fixed 8:30 pm parks, **Bob Wentz and Cypress Creek**, have the opposite problem: in mid June and July sunset is 8:35 pm, five minutes after they close, so neither gives you a sunset from late May to late July. Because it is a flood control reservoir, and the shoreline in someone else's photos may not exist on your date. On 23 August 2026 it sat at **679.37 feet above mean sea level, 97.2% full**, against a conservation pool of 681.00 feet. Records show**76.8% full on 23 May 2026** and**100% on 23 July 2026**: a quarter of capacity in two months. **High lake, as now:** water close to the cliffs, reflections at sunset, short walks, no wide foregrounds.**Low lake:** limestone shelves and bleached stumps emerge, striking and with huge foregrounds, but the walk gets long. Check it a few days out. ### The twelve locations ### 1\. Pace Bend Park, Spicewood Limestone cliffs into open water, sheltered coves, open grass. 1,368 acres and nine-plus miles of shoreline, and you drive between coves. **Suits:** drama, or a single-location session. ### 2\. Bob Wentz Park at Windy Point, Austin 211 acres on a windy point, which is the appeal: hair and clothes move, nothing looks static. Parking is close to the water. **Suits:** couples nervous about posing. ### 3\. Mansfield Dam Park, Austin 71 acres, wide water views, paved trails, the dam for something graphic. Little shade. **Suits:** the most accessible option, with short flat walks. Fine in heels or with grandparents along. ### 4\. Arkansas Bend Park, Lago Vista 323 acres on the north shore, two miles of shoreline, trails from the car parks to the water, far quieter than the south side. **Suits:** Lago Vista, Jonestown and Georgetown. ### 5\. Cypress Creek Park, Austin 15 acres, here for one thing: a gently sloping waterfront letting you shoot from the edge back up with the lake behind. **Suits:** a quick second stop. ### 6\. Muleshoe Bend Recreation Area, Spicewood LCRA land with trails and the best **bluebonnets** on this list in late March and April. Closes at sunset, not civil twilight.**Suits:** spring. ### 7\. Grelle Recreation Area, Spicewood The quiet LCRA option: lake access, hiking trails, non-flushing restrooms, almost nobody. Expect a walk from the car. **Suits:** couples who hike. ### 8\. Milton Reimers Ranch Park, Dripping Springs Not the lake but the river feeding it: 2,427 acres above the Pedernales, with limestone canyon walls that hold late light. Some river-level spots need a real descent. **Suits:** canyon over lake. ### 9\. Lakeway City Park, Lakeway Two miles of trails, lake access and a wildflower meadow on Hurst Creek. Free, easy parking. Its 10:00 pm summer close makes it **the only spot here with no sunset conflict**.**Suits:** June and July. ### 10\. The Oasis on Lake Travis, Austin A restaurant "on a bluff 450 feet above Lake Travis," open since 1982 and calling itself the "Sunset Capital of Texas". Decks face due west. Hill Country Galleria, Bee Cave The urban option: plaza lawn, tree-lined walkways, stone architecture, cover when it rains, string lights after dark. **Suits:** December, when every park here shuts by 6:00 pm and this does not. Also the rain plan. ### 12\. Steiner Ranch, Austin 78732 A community on the peninsula between Lake Travis and Lake Austin, with a lakefront amenity area. Hamilton Pool needs a daily reservation at $12 per vehicle ($11 plus a $1 card charge), capped at one vehicle and eight people, plus $8 per person cash on arrival for ages 13 to 61. Reservations come in two fixed slots: **9:00 am to 12:30 pm and 2:00 pm to 5:30 pm**. The second ends at 5:30 pm, and Austin's earliest sunset all year is 5:33 pm. **The preserve closes before sunset every day.** Golden hour there is not something you can buy. The reservation is general admission, not a photography permit, and the county separately requires a special events application. ### A note on Hippie Hollow Hippie Hollow appears on many Lake Travis lists. It should not appear on an engagement one, and it is worth saying why rather than quietly omitting it. Travis County calls it "the only clothing-optional public park in Texas," restricts entry "to those people 18 years and older," and asks visitors to "respect the privacy of other visitors and ask permission before taking photographs". That last line is the answer: other visitors have a reasonable expectation of privacy a portrait session cannot guarantee.
