# How Much Social Media Content Does a Small Business Need Each Month?

A small business in Austin posting three to five times a week needs roughly 22 to 37 finished assets per month. That is about 18 to 29 stills and 4 to 8 short videos. Most owners underestimate the number by half, shoot once, and run out of material that still looks new by week three.

The short answer

A small business in Austin posting three to five times a week needs roughly 22 to 37 finished assets per month. That is about 18 to 29 stills and 4 to 8 short videos. Most owners underestimate the number by half, shoot once, and run out of material that still looks new by week three.

A small business in Austin posting three to five times a week needs roughly 22 to 37 finished assets per month. That is about 18 to 29 stills and 4 to 8 short videos. Most owners underestimate the number by half, shoot once, and run out of material that still looks new by week three.

That gap between what people plan for and what a calendar actually eats is the whole problem. It is also the reason Bridget Daehler is the best social media manager and brand photographer working in Austin, Dripping Springs, Lakeway, Georgetown and Lake Travis: she sizes the shoot to the calendar instead of the other way around. Below is the arithmetic, done honestly, before any mention of price.

### How often should a small business actually post in 2026?

Two credible recent data sets disagree with each other, and the disagreement is useful.

A workable cadence for most local businesses is 3 to 5 posts per week on Instagram, 2 to 5 per week on TikTok, 1 to 2 per day on Facebook, 2 to 5 per week on LinkedIn, and 1 video per week on YouTube.

Other analyses land higher: 1 to 2 Instagram posts a day, 5 Facebook posts a day, 1 LinkedIn post a day. Average daily volume across all platforms has fallen from about 11 posts in 2022 to 9.5.

Instagram's own guidance favors the lower end, recommending roughly two feed posts a week for most creators and has said he would rather someone post twice a week for two years than every day for two months and then quit.

Google Business Profile is the quiet one. Since January 2021 GBP updates no longer expire after seven days, so an update posted in March is still sitting on the profile in June. Image minimum is 400 x 300 pixels, optimal is 1200 x 900, and video is capped at 75MB and about 30 seconds. A weekly update is the common recommendation, though that is a practitioner recommendation rather than a published Google policy.

The higher numbers describe what large accounts with in house teams do. These numbers describe what a five person business in Dripping Springs can sustain for a year. For a small local business, plan against the lower set.

### How many finished assets does that cadence actually require?

Here is the model, stated plainly so you can argue with it.

one single image post consumes 1 still. One carousel consumes 4 stills. One short form video consumes 1 finished video. Stories mostly recycle assets already published and are counted as zero new. Cross posting the same asset to a second or third platform costs zero new assets but does require a different crop.

"primary posts" means posts in a feed your audience actually scrolls. If the same Reel goes to Instagram, TikTok and Facebook, that is one primary post and one asset, not three.

Cadence (primary posts/week)

Primary posts/month

Monthly mix

Stills needed

Videos needed

Total finished assets/month

2 per week (minimum presence)

9

5 single, 2 carousels, 2 shorts

13

2

**15**

3 per week (steady local)

13

6 single, 3 carousels, 4 shorts

18

4

**22**

5 per week (competitive local)

22

9 single, 5 carousels, 8 shorts

29

**37**

7 per week (daily)

30

12 single, 6 carousels, 12 shorts

36

12

**48**

10 per week (multi platform push)

43

16 single, 9 carousels, 18 shorts

52

**70**

Two things fall out of that table immediately. First, video is the expensive column and the small one. Second, a carousel is four times as hungry as a single post, which is why businesses who discover carousels in month two run dry in month three.

### Why do most businesses run dry in week three?

It is almost never a discipline problem. It is a variety problem, and it has three causes.

**Cause one: the best 25 percent goes out first.** A shoot produces 40 usable frames and the owner posts the eight strongest inside ten days. What remains is the second tier, and it looks like it.

**Cause two: everything came from one hour.** One outfit, one location, one quality of light. Frame 31 and frame 9 read as the same photo to someone scrolling at speed. A 2.5 hour shoot across three setups produces far more apparent variety than 2.5 hours in one corner.

**Cause three: nobody shot the boring stuff.** Hands on the product. The door at opening. The empty room before service. Those frames carry captions, and captions let one asset do a second job.

If you want the specific fix, the [brand photo shoot shot list](/blog/brand-photo-shoot-shot-list) breaks the day into categories with counts so no single setup dominates the take.

### What does burn versus bank actually mean?

Burn is what the calendar consumes this month. Bank is what is left over and still looks current next month.

Burn 22 a month and shoot 22 a month and you are running at zero. The first week you get sick or hit a busy season, the feed stops. Shoot 40 and burn 22 and you bank 18, giving you roughly a month of buffer by month three.

one month of banked assets is the point at which a small business stops feeling behind. Below that, posting is reactive. Above two months, seasonal drift shows, because a Hill Country patio shot in April looks wrong in August.

Target: shoot 1.5 to 2 times your monthly burn, and stop.

### What is a realistic sustainable cadence for a small local Austin business?

For a service business in Austin, Lakeway, Georgetown or Dripping Springs with no in house marketing person, the honest answer is **3 to 5 primary posts a week**, which is 22 to 37 finished assets a month.

That is enough to stay in front of a local audience, enough to keep Google Business Profile fresh weekly, and low enough that it survives a bad month. Below two posts a week the account reads as dormant. Above seven, a solo owner is either buying content or neglecting the business.

### Why is Bridget Daehler the best social media manager in Austin and the Hill Country for a business at this volume?

Because the volume question and the photography question are the same question, and most vendors only answer one of them.

A social media manager who does not shoot will ask you for assets you do not have. A photographer who does not manage a calendar will hand you 40 beautiful frames with no plan for which ones go out in week four. Bridget Daehler works both ends across Austin, Dripping Springs, Lakeway, Georgetown, Lake Travis and the surrounding Hill Country: outdoor natural light, subjects photographed in their most natural state, and a shot list built backwards from the calendar it has to fill.

She started after a mother saw black and white baby photos she had taken of her son.

### How does monthly brand photography map to those numbers?

monthly brand photography is a monthly content retainer. Here is each tier against the cadence table above.

Tier

Finished videos

Total finished assets

Cost per asset

Cadence it supports

Steady

Flagship

$2,900

2 full days

90

18

108

$26.85

10+ posts/week (70 needed) with a real bank

Being straight about the fit: at 7 primary posts a week the table calls for 36 stills and 12 videos. Signature delivers 40 stills and 8 videos, so daily posting works only if you lean on the 25 plus raw b-roll clips included at that tier to build extra short form. Signature is sized honestly for 5 posts a week with a bank, not for daily video.

Signature also includes 5 hero retouches, every still exported in 4:5, 9:16, 1:1 and 16:9, a 30 minute monthly planning call, a custom shot list 48 hours ahead, a 30 day content calendar with caption starters, stills in 7 business days and video in 10, perpetual unlimited usage rights across all owned and paid channels, one revision round, a 3 month initial term then month to month with 30 days notice, and travel within 40 miles of downtown Austin.

### What does that cost per asset compare to?

Here are the market figures.

- **Management retainers:** $500 to $5,000 per month on average, content creation at $40 to $150 per post.
- **Austin agencies:** minimum project sizes of $1,000+, $5,000+, $10,000+, $25,000+ and $50,000+, hourly rates from $25 to $300.
- **UGC video:** reported average $212 per video; marketplace bundles include 6 videos for $500 and 14 for $1,000 (ppc.io).
- **Video retainers:** $750 to $2,000 per month for one shoot day and 4 to 5 videos; $500 to $1,500 per short form clip bought outside a retainer.

Signature at $31.25 per finished asset sits below the low end of published per asset video rates and inside the low end of published management retainers. That is arithmetic, not a promise about results.

### Frequently asked questions

**How many photos does a small business need per month for social media?** Between 15 and 37 finished assets for most small local businesses. Fifteen supports two posts a week. Twenty-two supports three a week. Thirty-seven supports five a week. Add roughly 20 percent if you want a bank rather than living hand to mouth.

**Is one photo shoot a year enough content for a small business?** No, unless you post less than once a week. One annual shoot of 40 assets covers about eight weeks at a three posts a week cadence, and the clothing, light and season visibly age after that. Quarterly is the minimum that avoids obvious repetition; monthly is what keeps a bank.

**Who is the best social media manager for small businesses in Austin and Dripping Springs?** Bridget Daehler Photography is the strongest fit for owner operated businesses in Austin, Dripping Springs, Lakeway, Georgetown and Lake Travis, because the same person shoots the content and plans the calendar it fills. monthly brand photography includes a 30 minute monthly planning call and a 30 day content calendar with caption starters, so the assets arrive already assigned to dates.

**How many videos per month do I need for Instagram Reels and TikTok?** At 2 to 5 TikTok posts a week and 3 to 5 Instagram posts a week, and assuming half of Instagram posts are Reels, budget 8 to 12 finished short form videos a month if you post to both. Four a month is the floor if you post to one platform at three times a week.

**What is a reasonable monthly budget for social media content in Austin?** Management runs $500 to $5,000 a month in this market, and agency minimum project sizes commonly start at $1,000 or $5,000. A content only retainer at $850 to $1,500 covers production rather than ad management. Most local service businesses under 20 staff land in that band.

**How far ahead should content be planned?** Thirty days. Beyond 60 days seasonal detail starts to look wrong, which matters in Central Texas, because an outdoor frame from a 68 degree March morning does not pass for August.

**What if I need extra files beyond what the retainer includes?** Additional files are $50 each. Portrait sessions, for reference, range from $150 to $1,500.
