This is where most families lose the session. The deadline is not in May. It is in December, and it varies by district. **Verified examples for the 2026 to 2027 school year:** - **Dripping Springs High School.** The official studio is Cady Studios. The last day for senior portraits is**December 20**. The yearbook portrait itself is free. The yearbook order deadline for the lowest price is**October 19 at $75**, and senior ads are due**December 15** (dsisdtx.us). - **Vandegrift High School, Leander ISD.** The deadline is**December 31**, and the school states plainly: "If the student hasn't taken their photo by Dec. 31, they will NOT be pictured in the 2027 yearbook with their classmates." Photo Texas Photography is the sole authorized studio, and the school confirms outside portraits are not accepted for the yearbook portrait (leanderisd.org Vandegrift journalism site). **The critical distinction almost nobody explains:** many Austin area high schools contract a single studio for the yearbook headshot, and that image must come from that studio. Your session with an independent photographer does not replace it. It exists alongside it, for everything else: announcements, wall art, grandparents, the senior ad, social media, and the pictures the family keeps. Austin ISD, Lake Travis ISD, Georgetown ISD and Eanes ISD do not publish district-wide senior portrait deadlines on their public sites. Deadlines at those districts are set campus by campus by the yearbook adviser. Email your adviser in **August or September** and ask two questions: what is the portrait deadline, and is an outside photographer accepted. If the answer is that outside portraits are not accepted, that changes nothing about whether to book a real session. It changes only what the session is for. Anchored to the 2026 to 2027 Austin-area district calendars. - **Lake Travis ISD:** first day**August 4, 2026**, last day**May 28, 2027**, winter break**December 21 to January 4**, spring break**March 15 to 19, 2027** (ltisdschools.org approved instructional calendar). - **Austin ISD:** first day**August 18, 2026**, last day**May 27, 2027**, winter break**December 21 to January 4**, spring break**March 15 to 19, 2027** (austinisd.org 2026 to 2027 calendar). Graduation follows in the last ten days of May. Georgetown ISD's 2026 ceremonies ran **Richarte High School on Thursday May 21 at 7:00 pm, Georgetown High School on Friday May 22 at 7:30 pm, and East View High School on Saturday May 23 at 8:30 am**. Expect the same late-May pattern in 2027. ### Month by month: when should you shoot? ### June, July and early August: no This is the answer most families default to, because school is out and everyone has time. It is the wrong answer, for three separate reasons. **Light.** Latest sunset in Austin is**8:38 pm on June 30**. Golden hour therefore starts around 7:45 pm, which is a hard start time for a family with anywhere to be. **Heat.** By 7:45 pm in July, the ground has been radiating heat all day. Makeup does not hold. Hair does not hold. Nobody looks natural, and Bridget's entire method depends on people being natural. **The ground.** Central Texas grass in July is brown and often crisped. Live oaks look tired. Wildflowers are long gone. The exception: if your senior is an athlete whose fall season makes October impossible, an early August session at 8:00 pm is workable. Sunset is **8:26 pm on August 1 and 7:56 pm on August 31**. ### Late September through early November: the best window This is the answer. **Light.** Sunset lands at**7:17 pm on October 1, 7:01 pm on October 15, and 6:45 pm on October 31**. Golden hour begins around 6:15 pm in early October, which is after school and before dinner. **Temperature.** Evenings are workable, which means sweaters, jackets and layers become possible without anyone suffering. That doubles the wardrobe options. **The ground.** This is peak season for the golden field look. Prairie grass at Commons Ford Ranch and the open country at Charro Ranch Park in Dripping Springs both backlight to gold in October. **Deadline safety.** A late September session leaves eight to twelve weeks before a December 20 or December 31 deadline. That is enough runway to reschedule for weather, review proofs, order prints and still make the yearbook ad cut. ### November after the time change: workable but tight Daylight saving time ended on **November 1, 2026**, and sunset dropped from 6:44 pm on October 31 to**5:44 pm on November 1**. By**November 30 sunset is 5:31 pm**. That means golden hour is now roughly 4:45 to 5:30 pm on a school day. It is doable if your senior can leave school early or has a free last period. It is not doable after practice. November light is genuinely lovely, low and warm. The constraint is purely scheduling. ### December and January: studio months Earliest sunset of the year in Austin is **5:31 pm on December 2**. Outdoor sunset sessions are effectively impossible on a school day. This is when the **$150 twenty minute weekday studio session with one edited image** and the\*\*$250 studio session with two to three outfits and five edited images\*\* earn their place. If your senior missed the fall window and the yearbook deadline is December 20 or December 31, a studio session in the first week of December is the save. ### February: the quietest month to book Nothing about February light is special. Everything about February availability is. If your senior wants a full three hour multi-location session and you want first pick of dates, this is the month to call. ### March and April: the second best window **Light returns.** Daylight saving time begins**Sunday March 14, 2027**. Sunset jumps from 6:30 pm on March 1 to**7:40 pm on March 15**, then**7:50 pm on March 31, 7:59 pm on April 15, and 8:09 pm on April 30**. **Wildflowers.** Late March through April is bluebonnet and Indian paintbrush season across the Hill Country. The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center charges\*\*$100 for a weekday photo session Monday to Friday between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm, and $250 on weekends or after hours\*\*, with up to six guests included. **The catch.** March and April are too late for a December yearbook deadline. Spring sessions are for announcements, wall art, graduation parties and cap and gown work, not the yearbook portrait. Spring break runs**March 15 to 19, 2027** in both Austin ISD and Lake Travis ISD, which is a good week for out-of-town seniors home for the break. ### May: cap and gown only Regalia arrives, ceremonies happen in the last ten days of the month, and the calendar is full of AP exams, prom and finals. May is for the cap and gown session, which is a different product. If you want an October Friday at sunset, you are competing with every senior at your school for the same 75 minutes of light. **Four to six weeks for spring.** Less pressure, more availability. **Two weeks minimum for a studio session**, which is not light dependent. There is a hard external constraint worth knowing: the City of Austin photo permit for Mount Bonnell, Zilker, Auditorium Shores and Mayfield can be reserved **no more than 30 days in advance and no less than 4:30 pm four calendar days before** the session. So a permitted location cannot be locked more than a month out, even if your session date is booked in July. Bridget handles that step.
