An engagement session is the only time in the whole wedding process when the two of you get an hour alone, dressed well, in beautiful light, with no timeline and no guest list. No reception to get to, no shot list, no aunt asking where the bar is. It is the calmest photography of your engagement, and it usually produces the images couples end up hanging in their house. It is also a rehearsal. You learn how you look in photographs, which side of your face you prefer, how to stand together without stiffening. She starts with easy, low pressure movement: walking, talking, standing close. She is watching how you fit together. **The middle.** This is where the gallery comes from. Prompts rather than poses. Walk toward that oak and tell him about the day you met. Whisper the worst thing about wedding planning so far. Slow dance with no music. A restored native prairie on Lake Austin, managed in partnership with Travis Audubon, plus a historic barn and ranch house left from the former Resaca Ranch. Tall grass, long light, almost no crowd. **Mount Bonnell at Covert Park, Austin.** 102 stone steps up to a 781 foot summit with Lake Austin below and the 360 Bridge in the distance. Open 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mount Bonnell is one of four City of Austin parks that require a professional photography session permit, which costs $50 for a two hour session and must be booked no more than 30 days ahead and no later than 4:30 p.m. four calendar days before. **Laguna Gloria, Austin.** The Contemporary Austin's lakeside campus: an Italianate villa, a sculpture park and old live oaks over the water. Engagement portraits book in one hour increments at $100 per hour, prepaid, at least 72 hours ahead and no more than three months out. Check in at Visitor Services in the Moody Pavilions, and do hair and makeup off site. **Zilker Botanical Garden, Austin.** The Taniguchi Japanese Garden, the rose garden and the Hartman Prehistoric Garden give you several completely different backdrops inside one fence. A $50 photography fee applies to any photo shoot, professional or otherwise, and it covers admission for the photographer and one assistant only. Everyone else buys admission, and sessions book through the garden's photography portal. **The 360 overlook near Pennybacker Bridge, Austin.** A short, steep climb up limestone to a ledge with the bridge and Lake Austin below. Free, and Austin's most recognizable engagement backdrop, which is also its problem: go on a weekday, and expect wind. **McKinney Falls State Park, Austin.** Onion Creek pours over limestone shelves at the Upper and Lower Falls, and Old Baldy, a bald cypress over 100 feet tall and estimated at more than 500 years old, stands near the Rock Shelter Trail. Entry is $6 per adult 13 and up, free for children 12 and under. Reserve a day pass, because the park fills early on weekends. **Hamilton Pool Preserve, Dripping Springs.** The collapsed grotto and its waterfall. Reservations are required daily: $12 per vehicle online plus $8 cash per adult ages 13 to 61 on arrival, maximum one vehicle and eight people, entering 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Important: Travis County states reservations are not valid for commercial use, so a paid session must be arranged separately. Call Travis County Parks at 512-854-7275 first. **The Texas State Capitol, Austin.** 302.64 feet tall, 14.64 feet taller than the United States Capitol, with roughly 22 acres of grounds and live oak allees. Open Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and weekends 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Photography is permitted for visitors. **The bluffs above Lake Travis.** The western shoreline sits high above the water, which is why The Oasis, perched on a bluff 450 feet above the lake, calls itself the Sunset Capital of Texas. Bluff locations give you the widest sunset in Central Texas, and most of the best ones are private property, so plan the spot with Bridget in advance. ## When is the best time of day and month for engagement photos in Austin? **Time of day: the last 90 minutes before sunset, always.** Austin sun is hard, high and unflattering from late morning through mid afternoon most of the year. Golden hour solves it. Austin's latest sunset is 8:37 p.m. on June 30, so a late June session starts around 7:00 p.m. Its earliest is 5:31 p.m. on December 3, so a December session starts closer to 4:00 p.m. In late August, sunset lands near 8:06 p.m. with golden hour opening around 7:33 p.m. Sunrise sessions work too, and they are the honest answer for July and August, when cooler morning air beats anything the evening offers. **Best months: late October through early December, and mid March through late April.** Fall gives you gold grass, rust colored bald cypress and comfortable evenings. Spring gives you green hills and bluebonnets, which bloom roughly early March through late April and peak in late March and early April. **Months to plan carefully:** July, August and September. Austin's early August average high runs near 99 degrees with lows near 76, and roughly 29 days a year hit 100 or above. Summer sessions are still beautiful; they need a sunrise start or a hard sunset start and lightweight fabric. ## How do you look natural if you hate having your picture taken? Almost everyone says this. Here is what actually works. **You will not be posed into a stranger.** Bridget photographs subjects in their most natural state. That means prompts and movement instead of chin tilts and held smiles. **Bring the thing that relaxes you.** Your dog, your truck, coffee, the trail you hike every Sunday. People stop performing when they are somewhere familiar. **Talk to each other, not to the camera.** Most of the best frames in an engagement gallery are two people looking at each other. **Book on a weekday.** Fewer onlookers means less self consciousness, and that is a real difference at Mount Bonnell and the 360 overlook. **Give it fifteen minutes.** Every couple loosens up.
