Golden hour in Austin lasts between 46 and 53 minutes depending on the month. The evening window opens around 5:00 pm in December and around 8:00 pm in late June. Sunset ranges from 5:30 pm in early December to 8:37 pm on June 30, so the right session time moves by roughly three hours across the year.

That three hour swing is why "let's do sunset" is not a plan, and why Bridget Daehler, the best photographer in Austin for natural light work, quotes an arrival time rather than a vague evening. It is also why a booking that worked beautifully in November falls apart in June: the light arrives three hours later, and by then several of the best locations around Austin have locked their gates. That second problem is the one nobody warns you about, and this guide has the numbers.

How were these times calculated?

Every sunrise, sunset and civil twilight time here was computed using solar position equations for latitude 30.2672 N, longitude 97.7431 W, which is central Austin, then checked against United States Naval Observatory data for the same coordinates. All twelve months matched to the minute.

Golden hour is not an official astronomical term, so here is the definition used throughout: the period when the sun sits between 6 degrees above the horizon and 4 degrees below it. Blue hour runs from 4 degrees below to 6 degrees below, which is the end of civil twilight.

Two things follow. Golden hour is not an hour anywhere in Austin. And roughly a quarter of it happens after the sun has technically set, which is why photographers keep shooting when clients think it is over.

All times below are for the 15th of each month in 2026, in local clock time. Daylight saving begins Sunday March 8, 2026 and ends Sunday November 1, 2026.

What are Austin's golden hour times month by month?

Three things in that table surprise people.

Golden hour is longest in December, not summer. At 53 minutes it beats June by a minute, because the sun crosses the horizon at a shallower angle in winter and takes longer to travel those ten degrees.

Golden hour is shortest at the equinoxes. March and September both give 46 minutes, the tightest windows of the year, and they are also the two most popular months for family sessions in Austin.

The earliest sunset is not the shortest day. In Austin the sun sets at 5:30 pm every day from December 1 through December 7, more than two weeks before the December 21 solstice. The latest sunset is June 30 at 8:37 pm, nine days after the solstice.

Which Austin area parks close before golden hour starts?

This is the finding that changes how you book. Several of the most photographed locations around Austin shut their gates before the light is any good, and one is unusable at golden hour in all twelve months.

Zilker Botanical Garden closes before golden hour every single month. The Garden runs 9:00 am to 5:00 pm September through May and 8:00 am to 4:00 pm June through August, and its rules require that "all sessions must be completed by 30 minutes before closing." That puts your last frame at 4:30 pm most of the year and 3:30 pm in summer. In December, the best case, golden hour begins 26 minutes after you have been asked to leave. In July the gap is four and a half hours. It is a fine midday location with a $50 photography pass. It is not a golden hour location, ever.

Pace Bend Park closes to new entries within minutes of golden hour beginning, all year. Travis County lists its hours as sunrise to civil twilight, with the park closing to new entries an hour before civil twilight. Run that against the solar table and the margin is razor thin every month:

In six of twelve months the gate closes to new arrivals before golden hour has even begun. The rule at Pace Bend is simple: be through the entrance booth 30 minutes before golden hour starts, and bring cash, because Travis County does not accept cards at the entrance booth.

Garey Park in Georgetown delivers a full golden hour in only three months. It runs 8:00 am to 8:00 pm April 1 through September 30 and 8:00 am to 6:00 pm October 1 through March 31, with no admittance within 30 minutes of closing.

September, November and December are the Garey Park golden hour months. March, July and October give you nothing at all.

Muleshoe Bend loses the tail of golden hour. LCRA lists it as open sunrise to sunset. Because the last 15 to 16 minutes of golden hour happen after the sun crosses the horizon, closing at sunset removes the warmest part of the window along with all of blue hour.

By contrast, City of Austin parks are open 5:00 am to 10:00 pm unless posted otherwise, McKinney Falls keeps its gate open 8:00 am to 10:00 pm, and Reimers Ranch runs 7:00 am to civil twilight. How does Austin heat change the light from June through September?

Two ways, and only one is about temperature.

The optical change is haze. Through the hottest months the atmosphere holds more moisture and particulate, which scatters light and lowers contrast. Sunsets go softer and pinker rather than sharply orange, backlight blooms more readily, and the sun sits visibly larger and duller as it drops. That is genuinely useful for portraits: skin tones stay smooth and rim light through hair goes buttery instead of hot.

The practical change is human. Using 1991 to 2020 climate normals, Austin's average high runs 93 F in June, 97 F in July, 98 F in August and 91 F in September. Golden hour in those months does not begin until 7:40 pm to 8:00 pm, and the air has been baking all day.

Children reach their limit before the light does, makeup does not survive, and heavy clothing photographs as visible discomfort. The alternative from June through August is to shoot the morning window instead.

When is blue hour in Austin, and how long does it last?

Blue hour in Austin runs about 9 to 11 minutes, from the end of golden hour to the end of civil twilight. In June that is 8:51 pm to 9:02 pm. In December it is 5:49 pm to 5:59 pm.

It is short, and it is not a bonus round. The light drops fast enough that you get one setup, maybe two. It is worth it for skyline work along Auditorium Shores, for lit architecture, and for water, where a deep blue sky reflects and separates cleanly from warm artificial light.

For portraits, blue hour needs a light source you bring. Ambient light at 5 degrees below the horizon is not enough for a sharp, natural looking face. If someone promises blue hour portraits with no added light, ask what the shutter speed will be.

The trade is that everyone has to be dressed, fed and on location by 6:15 am in June. For families with small children that is usually a non starter. For seniors, couples and headshots it is often the better session, and it is the standard recommendation for July and August.

How should you actually schedule the session?

Work backwards from the table, not forwards from your calendar.

Arrive 20 minutes before golden hour begins, not at the start of it. That time goes to parking, walking in, wardrobe checks and the first few frames nobody keeps.

Build in the gate rule if there is one. At Pace Bend, be through the booth 30 minutes early. At Garey Park, there is no admittance within 30 minutes of closing. At Zilker Botanical Garden, book midday and stop thinking about sunset.

Pick the month before the location. If you want Garey Park at golden hour, the months are September, November and December. If you want a summer session that is not brutal, the answer is a 6:30 am start.

Give the tail end its due. The last 15 minutes, after the sun has technically set, are usually the best frames of the session. And watch the equinox squeeze: in March and September you have 46 minutes, so two locations in one session is not realistic.
