What happens during an Austin senior portrait session?

1. The first conversation. You call or email. Bridget asks what your senior is into, what they hate about photos of themselves, what the yearbook requires and what the family wants on the wall.

2. Choosing the location. Bridget matches the location to the kid. A ranch kid from Dripping Springs and a theater kid from McCallum should not be shot in the same place. She suggests two or three spots and lets the senior pick.

3. Locking the date and the light. On location sessions are scheduled around golden hour. Austin sunset sits near 8:30 p.m. in late June and near 5:35 p.m. in early November ``, so your call time moves by month.

4. Wardrobe review before the day. Send outfit photos. Bridget tells you what will photograph well against limestone, water and live oak, and what will fight the background.

5. The first fifteen minutes. Warm up frames. Nobody is relaxed in the first five minutes and Bridget does not pretend otherwise. She talks, she walks, she shoots anyway.

6. Outfit and location changes. Up to three outfits depending on your package, and multiple locations on the larger sessions. Bring someone to hold the extra clothes.

7. The eyes. Partway through, Bridget slows everything down and works close. This is usually where the frame the family prints comes from.

8. Extra people. Parents, siblings, grandparents, dogs and horses are welcome. The $1,500 session allows unlimited people.

• Mount Bonnell at Covert Park, 3800 Mt Bonnell Rd. Roughly 775 feet up with a long view over Lake Austin. City of Austin photography permit required, $50 per 2 hour session, booked at least four days ahead.
• Zilker Metropolitan Park. Open field, big sky, downtown skyline behind you. Also a $50 per 2 hour permit park.
• Auditorium Shores. The classic skyline-across-the-water frame, and one of only four Austin parks where a photo permit can be issued.

• May and June, as junior year ends. The strongest window. School stress is over, light is long, and you are ahead of every yearbook deadline.
• July. Central Texas heat is real. Sessions move to the last ninety minutes of daylight or to shaded water locations like Bull Creek and Blue Hole.
• August. The busiest booking month, because families finally see the deadline coming. Book in June to get an August slot.
• September and October. Ideal weather and the last comfortable window before most fall yearbook deadlines close. ``
• November. Best color of the year in the Hill Country, and sunset near 5:35 p.m. means sessions start right after school.
• December and January. Quiet months. Good for a senior who missed the fall and for graduation announcement images.
• February and March. Wildflower scouting. Bluebonnets typically appear late March into April ``, and those slots book out fast.

What should I wear for senior pictures?

Bring three outfits covering three versions of the person: one clean and simple, one they would actually wear on a Saturday, and one dressed up. Solid colors and real fabrics photograph better than logos and shine. Skip neon, which throws color onto skin. Bring the jersey, the instrument, the boots, the truck keys or the dog, because props that mean something produce better expressions than props that only look good.
