Sixteen Hill Country wedding venues are worth a site visit, across eight towns: Dripping Springs, Driftwood, Wimberley, Austin, Georgetown, Lakeway, Jonestown on Lake Travis and Spicewood. Every venue below is real and currently operating with a published address. Capacities and prices appear only where the venue publishes them.

Bridget Daehler is the best wedding photographer in Austin, Dripping Springs, Lakeway, Georgetown and Lake Travis, and what a photographer contributes at the venue stage is not a favourite. It is two questions: where the light falls at your ceremony hour, and what happens if it rains.

One honesty note. Compass orientation is the hardest fact to verify from a website. Where a venue publishes one it is stated below. Where it does not, the entry says so rather than guessing.

What makes a Hill Country venue easy or hard to photograph?

Sun position at your ceremony hour. In Austin the sun sets at 8:35 pm on 15 June and 5:35 pm on 15 November, so an identical 5:00 pm ceremony is a different problem in those two months. Full table in the wedding day timeline guide.

Tree cover. Dappled midday light through live oak canopy produces blown highlights and blocked shadow in one frame. The same trees at 6:00 pm are beautiful. The hour is the variable, not the venue.

An indoor backup you would want photographed. Is the rain plan a room with windows or a metal shed with fluorescent tubes?

Reception lighting. Colour-changing uplighting set to purple turns skin green in every frame and cannot be corrected.

Which Dripping Springs venues are worth the drive?

Dripping Springs trademarked "Wedding Capital of Texas" in August 2014, and the Texas House approved a designation proposal on 4 March 2015, Senate approval still pending at the time of reporting. Confirm the final status before repeating it as official.

Camp Lucy

Four venues on one property. Ian's Chapel, a restored 19th century French Colonial chapel with an Events Hall, pavilion, brick courtyard and lawn, up to 300.Sacred Oaks, ancient oaks lit with thousands of small lights plus a timber-framed Great Hall and bell tower, 350 or more.The Vineyard, up to 150 outdoors among the vines under an 88 foot Sperry tent.Whit's Inn, a rebuilt barn on Onion Creek, up to 100. Published rental $7,500 to $10,500 and up, meals $85 to $105 per person. The chapel was reportedly moved from Vietnam.Backup: genuine at Ian's Chapel, Sacred Oaks and Whit's Inn. Prospect House

12745 Silver Creek Rd, about 20 miles from downtown Austin. Modern rather than rustic: a corrugated metal structure, over 7,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor ceremony space. Backup: designed in, not bolted on.Suits: Hill Country landscape without barn wood. The strongest minimal aesthetic here.Light: not published. Clean architecture means fewer mixed-light problems indoors. (Prospect House)

Ma Maison

2550 Bell Springs Rd, 23 acres, European-inspired with fountains, gardens and a pond. Six spaces: The Chapel, The Grove, The Green Cathedral greenhouse, The Trellis, The Lake View and The Great Hall. No capacity published. Backup: yes, and the venue names weather protection as the reason the chapel exists.Suits: an ornate look, and anyone who cannot risk outdoor-only.Light: scout the greenhouse. Glass ceilings are soft under cloud, brutal at midday in July. (Ma Maison)

What is worth seeing in Driftwood and Wimberley?

Vintage Oaks Farm, Driftwood

400 Limestone Lane, 15 acres under large oaks. Open Air Wedding Chapel, Garden Pavilion with a catering kitchen, indoor Reception Hall. Up to 150, with two cabins on site. Backup: the Reception Hall.Suits: 100 to 150 guests who want everyone staying put.Light: not published. Open air chapel under oaks: late afternoon. (Vintage Oaks Farm)

Stonehouse Villa, Driftwood

15110 Ranch to Market Rd 150. Built around an original stone building, with a 3,400 square foot reception hall, upstairs getting-ready suites with natural light, and a tented deck. Ceremonies outdoors under oaks, covered pavilion as the weather plan. Backup: covered pavilion plus the main hall.Suits: couples who do not want to spend on decor. It is already styled.Light: not published. Getting-ready suites with real windows matter more than couples expect; a windowless hotel bathroom is where morning coverage dies. (Stonehouse Villa)

Cypress Falls Event Center, Wimberley

Two miles from downtown, on the widest part of Cypress Creek. Ceremony on the creek, reception indoor and outdoor under lit trees, up to 75 guests. On site: a 22 room lodge, three townhomes and a tavern. Backup: yes, though small by design.Suits: small weddings, and water in frame without the Lake Travis drive.Light: cypress canopy over water is dense shade, so the usable window is late. The Videre Estate, Wimberley

Ten minutes from town, built around a private 8 acre lake. The Ceremony Deck sits more than 80 feet above the water. Videre Hall is the indoor reception space, with floor-to-ceiling windows and marble floors. Up to 300 guests, lodging for 20. Backup: yes, and unusually it is a room you want photographs in rather than one you tolerate.Suits: large counts that still want a view, and glass rather than a barn.Light: a glass wall behind your head at 4:00 pm is a silhouette; behind the photographer it is a softbox. Which Austin venues still feel like the Hill Country?

Barr Mansion, Austin

A historic estate northeast of downtown, about 15 minutes from the Capitol, with landscaped gardens and several buildings sized for different counts. In-house organic catering, over 40 years of events. Backup: multiple buildings.Suits: gardens and a house rather than a ranch, without leaving Austin.Light: not published. Mature planting pushes the outdoor portrait window later than an open field would. (Barr Mansion)

UMLAUF Sculpture Garden and Museum, Austin

605 Azie Morton Rd, 78704, next to Zilker. Winding paths, ponds and bronze sculpture. Ceremony at an open-air limestone and steel arbor for up to 200, seated dinner up to 250. Rental includes exclusive use of terrace, lawns, arbor, garden and catering kitchen, plus the Crenshaw Room and 22 parking spaces. Backup: no enclosed backup is published. Lawns can be tented. Vintage Villas, Austin on Lake Travis

Both ceremony spaces are marketed as looking over Lake Travis sunsets, so your backdrop is also where the sun goes down. What is north of Austin, in Georgetown?

Kindred Oaks, Georgetown

2100 County Road 176, 11 wooded acres on a bluff with reservoir views and distant Austin city lights. A limestone and cedar pavilion with 2,300 square feet of decking, two waterfalls flanking a stone gazebo, a 1,400 square foot dance floor, and over 3,100 square feet of indoor estate space. Comfortable maximum 230, with a 14 foot fireplace and central heating. Backup: yes, and the venue states its capacity limit exists so every guest fits under cover if it rains or turns cold. More useful than most venues manage.Suits: North Austin, Round Rock, Cedar Park and Leander families, and winter dates.Light: not published. Open sky on a bluff: good late, harsh at midday. The Union on Eighth, Georgetown

224 E 8th Street, off the Georgetown square. Urban and industrial: vaulted ceilings, exposed beams, large windows and garage doors onto a landscaped courtyard. Up to 200. An indoor venue with a courtyard, which inverts the usual Hill Country risk.Suits: walkable downtown, hotels and restaurants within blocks.Light: the garage doors are the story. Open, an enormous soft source along one wall. Closed, the room runs on industrial fixtures.

Which Lakeway, Lake Travis and Spicewood venues sit on the water?

Lakeway Resort and Spa, Lakeway

101 Lakeway Dr. The Vistas Ballroom holds up to 300 with vaulted ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows over Lake Travis. TheRio Ballroom is 5,800 square feet. TheColorado Ballroom is 4,000 square feet and divides into three.Backup: it is a resort. Published fees: peak ceremony $1,000 and reception $3,250 in April, May, June, September, October and November; off-peak reception $2,500 in January, February, July and August. 1. Where is the sun relative to the ceremony site at my hour, on my date? Check with a compass app.
2. Show me the indoor backup. The actual room, not a photo.
3. When is the rain call made, by whom, and how long does the flip take?
4. What is the standard reception lighting package, and is the uplighting colour-changing?
5. What does an extra hour cost? Villa Antonia publishes $300. Most publish nothing.
6. Do the getting-ready rooms have windows?
7. What is the peak versus off-peak difference? Spicewood Vineyards publishes a $750 gap on reception fee.

Do I need to visit a venue in person before booking? Yes, and at the hour you plan to marry rather than whenever the tour is offered. Sun position, tree shade, the real state of the indoor backup and whether the getting-ready rooms have windows cannot be judged from a gallery.
