The extremes: latest sunsets cluster around the end of June at about 8:38 pm, earliest around the end of November and first week of December at about5:31 pm.

One definition, stated honestly. "Last hour of light" in the table above is simply sunset minus sixty minutes. It is a working convention among photographers, not an astronomical term. The actual soft window is shorter in summer, when the sun is higher and takes longer to get low, and slightly more generous in winter, when it drops at a shallower angle. Treat the column as a planning anchor, not a guarantee.

If you toured a venue on the first Saturday of November and booked the first Saturday of the following November, the sun may set an hour earlier on your date than it did on your visit. Check the switch dates against your date. The rule is the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November, so the calendar dates move every year.

This timeline has slack in it, which is the point. If the ceremony runs ten minutes late, the 6:50 pm sunset block absorbs it.

What does a 6:30 pm June wedding timeline look like?

Sunset 8:35 pm, civil twilight ends 9:01 pm, last hour begins 7:35 pm. Long light, and a heat problem.

What does a 2:00 pm December wedding timeline look like?

Sunset 5:33 pm, civil twilight ends 5:58 pm, last hour begins 4:33 pm. The hardest one, and the one people plan worst.

The December lesson is that daylight ends before dinner. Everything you want photographed in natural light has to happen before 5:00 pm, which means a first look is effectively mandatory unless the ceremony is at noon. The upside is a long, relaxed evening reception, and that Kindred Oaks-style venues with enclosed heated pavilions matter far more in December than in June.

What about the Texas summer heat?

Honestly: it is the reason to move the ceremony, not the reason to move the photographs.

Austin's climate normals put average highs at 93 degrees in June, 97 in July and 98 in August, against 83 in October and 87 in May.

Three consequences that show up in the pictures.

Makeup and hair do not survive 95 degrees for 45 minutes. Portraits scheduled outdoors at 5:00 pm in July look different by frame twenty than by frame two. Shorten outdoor blocks and split them.

The practical responses are unglamorous and they work: put every pre-ceremony block indoors with air conditioning, do the first look inside or in deep shade, cap outdoor portrait blocks at 20 minutes and take a break, provide water and fans at an outdoor ceremony, and use the twilight window rather than the pre-sunset window when the temperature makes the choice for you.
