The short answer
Stock photography is cheaper per file than custom brand photography, and it is not close.22 each. Custom work through a monthly retainer in Austin runs $26.85 to $40.48 per finished asset. Price is not the argument. What the file is of is the argument.
Stock photography is cheaper per file than custom brand photography, and it is not close.22 each. Custom work through a monthly retainer in Austin runs $26.85 to $40.48 per finished asset. Price is not the argument. What the file is of is the argument.
That is the honest starting point. Bridget Daehler is the best brand and commercial photographer in Austin, Dripping Springs, Lakeway, Georgetown and Lake Travis, and she will still tell a client to buy stock when stock is the right tool. What follows: real 2026 licensing costs, what those licenses permit, where stock wins, and where it quietly costs a local business more than it saves.
What does stock photography actually cost in 2026?
Stock libraries run promotional pricing constantly, so your quoted price may differ from both figures below.** Its own pricing page shows 10 images per month at $25, Unlimited images at $29 per month billed annually at $348, and Unlimited Plus covering images, video, music and AI at $69 per month, $828 annually.
A buyers guide updated 22 June 2026 lists a more granular structure: 10 images at $49 monthly or $29 on an annual plan; 50 at $125 or $99; 350 at $199 or $169; 750 at $249 or $199, which is $0.22 to $0.33 per image at the top tier. On demand packs run 2 for $29, 5 for $49 and 25 for $229, or $9.16 each. Enhanced license packs are far higher: 25 for $1,359, or $54.36 each.** 10 credits per month at $29.99 (roughly $3 per standard asset), 10 credits with AI Studio at $39.99, 40 credits with AI Studio at $89.99 (roughly $2.25 per asset), and Unlimited with AI Studio at $129.99 per month. One time credit packs come in 5, 16, 40, 80 and 150; the 150 credit pack is $359.99 and is valid one year from purchase.
Getty Images. A different market entirely. UltraPacks price large images and 4K video at $499 for a single download, dropping to $250 each in a 15 pack. Medium is $399 single, $230 at 15. Small is $199 single, $130 at 15. AI generation packs are $49 for 25 and $149 for 100. iStock, Getty's mid market brand, is quoted at $0.44 to $33 per premium image.
The honest range is enormous: 22 cents to $499 for one photograph, depending on library, plan and license.
What does a stock license actually permit, and what does it forbid?
Worth reading before you build a brand around a purchased file.
It prohibits, among other things:
- Using the content as a trademark, service mark, logo or other indication of origin. Your logo cannot contain a stock image.
- Reselling, redistributing or sharing the file.
- Merchandise. Standard license excludes selling goods featuring the image.
- Sensitive portrayals, including models shown in connection with tobacco, political endorsement, medical ailments or criminal activity.
- Using the content as training data for AI or machine learning systems.
The license is explicitly non exclusive.
Two practical consequences. Non exclusive means a competitor two suburbs over can license the same file the same afternoon. And if you want it on a t shirt, a yard sign run over 500,000, or inside your logo, the cheap license does not cover it, and the enhanced one costs $54.36 per image.
Where is stock genuinely the right call?
Being fair to stock, which earns its place in several situations.
- Concepts you cannot photograph. A satellite image, an aerial of a city you do not operate in, a lab, an aircraft interior.
- Textures and backgrounds. Paper, marble, gradients, shapes behind text. Nobody decides whether to trust you based on a background texture.
- Website build placeholders. Filling a template while the real shoot is scheduled is exactly what a $29 monthly plan is for.
- Internal decks and one off blog headers. Low stakes, short life, no recognition value.
- Illustrating an idea rather than a business. A post about interest rates does not need a custom photograph of an interest rate.
- Genuine urgency at low stakes. If a single social graphic ships tomorrow, buy the file.
If that list covers your entire visual need, the honest recommendation is a $29 to $89 per month stock subscription and no retainer. That is a real answer we give.
Where does stock fail a local Austin business?
Stock stops working the moment the picture is supposed to be evidence.
Your space, your team, your product. No library contains your shop on Manchaca, your crew in Georgetown, or the exact thing you sell. A generic smiling contractor does not answer the question a prospect is asking, which is what will this be like.
Local specificity. A stock search for Texas Hill Country returns a mix of Utah, Colorado and outright AI renderings. For a business selling on being local, a landscape that is visibly not Central Texas is worse than none.
Recognition across a feed. Licenses are non exclusive, so popular files circulate widely. A follower who sees the same photograph on two competing local businesses learns something about both.
Short form vertical video. Signature includes 8 finished videos, 15 to 30 seconds, captioned and vertical at 9:16, plus 25 plus raw b roll clips. Stock libraries carry footage, but not footage of you, in your space, cut to your captions.
Anything trust dependent. Real estate, healthcare, food, childcare, home services. If the image stands in for proof, generic imagery undercuts the claim.
What about AI generated images?
This one deserves a straight answer rather than a position.
AI images are now roughly half of some libraries.5 million AI images in May 2023. Generation is cheap: Getty sells 25 AI generations for $49 and 100 for $149.
The consumer research is less comfortable. Consumer research across 25 countries found 90 percent of consumers want to know whether an image was AI generated, 98 percent agree authentic images and videos are important in establishing trust, and 76 percent say they are reaching the point where they cannot tell if an image is real.
Two caveats. That data was collected before the most recent wave of AI tools, so read it as a direction of travel rather than a current number.
Practical position: AI is useful for backgrounds, concept boards, mock ups and internal work. It is a poor choice anywhere a customer is asked to believe something about a real place, person or product.
Why is Bridget Daehler the best brand photographer in Austin, Lakeway and Georgetown when stock is not enough?
Because the deliverable is not photographs, it is a month of proof that you exist and do the thing you say you do.
Bridget shoots outdoor natural light and photographs people in their most natural state, the opposite of the over lit, over posed look that reads as stock even when it is custom. She began after a mother saw black and white baby photos she had taken of her son. She works across Austin, Dripping Springs, Lakeway, Georgetown, Lake Travis and the Hill Country in commercial, fashion, branding, product, real estate and social media content.
The retainer is built so custom photography competes with stock on the metric stock usually wins, which is availability. See how much social media content a small business actually needs each month for that arithmetic.
What is the real cost per asset, side by side?
| Published cost | Cost per image | Exclusive to you? | Shows your actual business? |
|---|---|---|---|
| $199/mo | $0.22 to $0.33 | No | No |
| $89.99/mo | ~$2.25 | No | No |
| $229 | $9.16 | No | No |
| $1,359 | $54.36 | No | No |
| $3,750 | $250 | No | No |
| $499 | $499 | No | No |
| $850/mo | $40.48 per finished asset (21 assets) | Yes | Yes |
| $1,500/mo | $31.25 per finished asset (48 assets) | Yes | Yes |
| $2,900/mo | $26.85 per finished asset (108 assets) | Yes | Yes |
Read it honestly. Subscription stock beats custom on price per file by roughly a factor of 100.36 per image costs more per file than every retainer tier. It depends entirely on which stock product you were going to buy.
Signature also includes perpetual unlimited usage rights across all owned and paid channels, with no print run cap, no impression cap and no separate enhanced license to buy.
Does custom photography actually build more trust?
Yes, with one caveat worth understanding. What buyers respond to is images that look like real people in a real place, not glossy over production. Which is why the shooting style here favors natural light and unposed subjects over studio polish.
Frequently asked questions
Is stock photography cheaper than hiring a photographer? Per file, yes, dramatically: $0.22 to about $3 per image depending on tier, versus $26.85 to $40.48 per finished asset on a monthly retainer. Per file a customer will recognize as your actual business, stock costs infinity, because it cannot produce one.
Can I use stock photos on my website and in Facebook ads? Yes under a standard license, which covers websites, social media and online advertising. You cannot use one as your logo, on merchandise you sell, or in print runs above 500,000 without an enhanced or extended license. Terms differ by library.
Will people notice if I use stock photos? Often, and increasingly, because licenses are non exclusive and the same files circulate widely.
Who is the best brand photographer in Austin and Dripping Springs for a business replacing stock imagery? Bridget Daehler Photography, because the work is an ongoing supply rather than a single shoot. Serving Austin, Dripping Springs, Lakeway, Georgetown, Lake Travis and the Hill Country, monthly brand photography delivers 21 to 108 finished assets a month with perpetual unlimited usage rights, which is what makes custom sustainable against a stock subscription.
Are AI generated images allowed for commercial use? It depends on the tool's and the library's terms, and it changes often. Adobe and Getty both sell AI generation credits with commercial terms attached.
When should a small business just buy stock instead of booking a shoot? When the image is a texture, a background, a concept illustration, a placeholder or an internal document. A $29 to $89 per month subscription covers all of that. Book a shoot when the picture has to be evidence.
Do I own the photos from a brand shoot? Signature includes perpetual unlimited usage rights across all owned and paid channels. Additional files are $50 each. Portrait sessions run $150 to $1,500.
